OBITUARY

Gene Ray Hamer, 91, of St. Clair passed away at his home, with his family by his side, April 3, 2026.

Gene, son of the late Frank and Josephine Hamer was born July 15, 1934 in Newell, PA.

He completed his education in the Belle Vernon area schools. A highly skilled auto mechanic, Gene began his career at an early age tinkering with cars, trucks and tractors owned by farmers who lived near his home in Pennsylvania.

Gene and his wife, Maryann were united in marriage on June 29, 1954. In 1955 they moved to Missouri, eventually settling in Franklin County. Their marriage, which spanned 71 years, was blessed to include four sons, six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

He later completed the courses required to become a Certified Chrysler Master Technician and was well-known in the area for his skills.

After retiring in 1996 at age 62, his love of autos continued as he repaired vehicles for family and friends and worked other automotive projects with his sons.

Gene loved the outdoors and often joined family and friends hunting and fishing. He was often contented just spending time in the woods. For several years he and his wife traveled throughout the eastern U.S., enjoying their camping experience in state parks and frequently visiting places of historical interest along the way.

Gene was preceded in death by his oldest son, Barry and granddaughter, Mynda Hamer.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann, his sons Robert (Crystal), Thomas (Caroline) and John (Beth), six grandchildren, Jane (Jason) Buchanan, Robert Jr. (Sarah) Hamer, Mike (Sherrie) Hamer, Michelle (Reggie) Gardner, Emily (Brian) Augustine, Sara Jo Hamer and step-grandson, Nick Collias. Survivors also include twelve great-grandchildren, Megan Ann Hamer, Gavin Merkel, Nakota Buchanan, Carys Merkel, Landin and Khloe Hamer, Jaxon, Aubrey Jo and Miles Hamer, Marlayna Rea, Alois and Isla Augustine, one sister, Eleanor Hammond, nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends also mourn his passing.

Services were held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Union, MO with Rev. Richard Watt officiating.

The family was served by Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO.
